Every book had its own private, provocative scent. Amos Oz’s autobiographical epic is so honest, and it includes so much of the history of his family from eastern Europe and of Israel which I love. There are some really beautiful and poetic passages in this memoir amid some incredibly tedious passages. He possessed a quality that is hardly ever found among men, a marvellous quality which for many women is the sexiest in a man: There were lots of great lines and word use in this book such as “arguing with an angry chorus of dogs”, “whole parliament of sparrows”, and “inhaling silence like a smell”.
